Question
I feel fat at ballet class?
I am and quot and weigh pounds, but I feel so fat compared to the other girls. The other girls are so SO slim next to me. They are of Chiese ethnicity and I am caucasian, and they are so petit and tiny next to me, even though I wear a dress size in England. They always comment about how tall I am in a derogatory manner and talk about how massive my pointe shoes are I take a shoe size or Canadian .
Answer
Thats really awful! You are the perfect size for a ballerina. Among quotnormalquot people not dancers LOL, youd probably be considered too thin.brbrI think there are a couple of things going on here. First, almost everyone in ballet class thinks theyre too fat. It just seems to be an epidemic among dancers, unfortunately. The other thing is that your classmates are racists, plain and simple. Theyre putting you down because you look different from them. What if the situation were reversed, and you were the only Asian girl in a class full of Caucasian dancers, and they all made fun of your size? That wouldnt be too cool, would it? Its not acceptable, either way.brbrWhat to do? Well, youre probably not going to be able to change them they dont sound like very nice people anyway. So either youre going to have to find another place to dance, or youre going to have to get tough. Is there another studio where you can study where you wont be the only quotdifferentquot one? That would seem like the easiest solution tell the owner of your studio why youre leaving...and then leave. brbrIf for some reason you must stay where you are, youre going to need to work very hard with yourself. As someone else here mentioned, I think you really know youre not fat. Just focus on your dancing and forget those other girls. Seriously, just ignore them. Pretend theyre not there.brbrIve taken lots of ballet classes in New York with professional dancers, who were just in the class to warm up or nurse an injury or something. Believe me, those professionals do not pay any attention to the people around them. They focus on themselves and what they want to get out of the class. They dont look at anyone else, talk to anyone else, or worry about anyone else. Theyre in class for themselves, to work. Can you try to take that approach? Youre not in class to compete with those little beasts youre there for you. Ignore their comments, ignore them. Seriously, just start cutting them dead. Focus on what you want to get out of each class. Listen to the teachers corrections. Watch yourself in the mirror. Work on becoming a better dancer. If you can take that attitude, you can dance in any kind of negative situation.brbrGood luck to you!
